Ashtabula County, Ohio

My husband's parents came to town for a visit and while they were here we took a day trip out to Ashtabula County, the largest county in Ohio.

Since Ashtabula county is on the shores of Lake Erie we started our trip at the Conneaut lighthouse. On our way we saw signs for a Railway Museum and since we have a budding locomotive engineer among us, we just had to stop and see what they had in their collection. It is a very nice collection and while you wouldn't necessarily make a trip just for the museum(it is small but well done) it was definitely the highlight of our day!

After the museum we meandered through the countryside looking for covered bridges, at one time there were 53 in the county. There are now 17 covered bridges remaining. We were also looking for round barns and houses that I had mapped out with the bridges so we could meander and hit as many as possible.

If you'd like more info on Ashtabula County, they have a wonderful convention and visitor bureau website: http://www.visitashtabulacounty.com/index.html
They also have a PDF map of the county with the bridges and other points of interest: http://www.visitashtabulacounty.com/maps.htm

Penitentiary Glen

I took my son to Penitentiary Glen this morning when it was still misty and wet from overnight rain. We were having a great time until he slipped and his rain boot clad foot went all the way into a little marsh area they have. Needless to say, we had to cut that visit short, his little foot squishing with every step, but we went back with his daddy this evening and I was able to capture some of this little park's beauty. It is one of our favorite adventures. I hope you enjoy!
